Transport Council: No Agreement on Week-end Driving Bans

Publication date: 11 June 2004

Meeting today, the EU Transport Ministers failed to agree on banning heavy-goods vehicles during weekends and public holidays.
Already in December 2003, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria and France formed a blocking minority, insisting the matter does not fall within the Community's competence. Now, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Malta, Slovakia and the United Kingdom joined forces with the other four contries. The Presidency therefore referred the file (COM(2003) 473 final) back to Coreper for further examination.
