Slovenia's Road Toll System

Publication date: 24 March 2009

PRESS RELEASE

Brussels, 24th March 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Visitors deserve a short stay vignette!

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) joined forces with its automobile clubs to gather citizens’ discontent with the Slovenian road-toll system introduced in July last year. According to the current system, motorists and holiday-makers driving on Slovenian highways are obliged to pay for a 6 month- or yearly-vignette (respectively 35 EUR or 55 EUR) regardless of whether they stay only weeks, days or even just transit the country.

The active involvement of FIA European clubs in this debate has already provoked a formal warning from the European Commission. Regrettably, it does not look likely that the Slovenian government will introduce a short-stay vignette for the holiday season 2009. This is unacceptable for European motorists, visitors and tourists to Slovenia. who will have to bear an unfair and disproportionate level of costs for their use of the motorways for yet another tourist season.

European motorists are encouraged to share their experienceand views about the Slovenian vignette by filling in our online survey available in the 6 languages used by the participating FIA clubs.  We would especially like to hear from visitors living in neighbouring countries to Slovenia (see http://www.fiabrussels.com/ ).

Such a discriminatory system cannot be tolerated within the European Union. If the Slovenian Government does not comply with the European Commission’s warning, FIA clubs would call on the Commission to bring the case to the European Court of Justice.

FIA supports the quick introduction of a short-stay vignette, that fairly represents motorists and tourist use of Slovenian highways. The preliminary findings of the survey will be handed over to the European Commission, for the attention of Vice-President Tajani, European Commissioner for transports.
