Interoperability of Electronic Road Toll Systems

Following a recommendation from Renate Sommer, the European Parliament today gave second reading approval to a directive on the interoperability of electronic road toll systems (COM(2003) 132 - COD(2003) 0081.

No amendments were made to the Council's common position, which means that systems based on traditional microwave technology can co-exist in the future with new systems using satellite technology. The European Commission had originally proposed a mandatory use of the satellite positioning system.
