Energy efficiency is the right answer to energy related challenges
Publication date: 19 February 2009
Source: European Parliament
Today the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favour of the report on the follow-up of the energy efficiency national action plans. András Gyürk (MEP, EPP-ED) the rapporteur of the report called on the EU to significantly strengthen the current subsidies in this field. He said energy efficiency should have a more prominent role in the next long-term financial perspective of the European Union.
The Gyürk report also calls on the EU to further strengthen the legal framework regarding energy efficiency. The recast of the Energy Efficiency of Buildings Directive and the new Ecodesign Directive might lead to significant energy savings in the upcoming years.
The rapporteur emphasised that national governments should also take a leading role in the field of energy efficiency. The report states that there is a great need for extensive campaigns to inform European citizens about the possible advantages of efficient energy use. The report urges the European Commission to consider preparing legislation aimed at the involvement of energy efficiency standards in public procurement procedures.
András Gyürk underlined that "The development of energy efficiency can be a solution for most energy related challenges in Europe. A more efficient use of energy would decrease the dependence on external energy sources, contribute to our environmental goals as well as making European economies more competitive."
