Council adapts Common Position on Rear View Mirrors

Publication date: 20 October 2003

The Council of Ministers adopted today its common position on the proposal for a Directive amending technical provisions on rear view devices (COM(2003) 0547 - 2001/0317 (COD)). It includes the European Parliament´s amendment requesting that the Commission should adapt the new Directive to bring it in line with provisions already agreed within UN/ECE. The Council´s common position extends also a number of transition periods, such as the mandatory application of provisions on the type-approval of rear view devices from 36 to 72 months for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

Proposal COM (2001)811 - 2001/0317 (COD) aims to improve drivers´ vision and reduce vehicle blind spots by installing additional rear view devices in certain vehicles, adapting technical characteristics of rear view devices and replacing certain rear view mirrows with other indirect vision systems such as camera-monitors.
