INVITATION TO "ABS FOR MOTORCYCLES" WORKSHOP Organised by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) European Bureau, Brussels, Thursday 14th October 2010, 9.30 – 13.30
Accident research conducted by the FIA motoring and touring club, ADAC(1), estimates that Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), in Germany alone, could save the life of some 160 motorcyclists per year. You can only imagine the potential that this represents at the European level. Further, ABS would benefit novice drivers and shorten the braking distance, without falling. Currently, roughly only a quarter of the 3.7 million motorcycles in Germany are fitted with ABS. For new registrations, the share of ABS-fitted motorcycles is only about 60 percent. Taking place during the European Road Safety Day, the workshop offers an opportune moment to address and to discuss ABS for motorcycles, as it fits rightly with the EU political agenda on road safety(2) and the need to tackle the increasing number of motorcycle accidents Europe wide. The FIA has invited a number of distinguished expert guests to participate in this workshop: • Malcolm Harbour (MEP and Chairman of the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO Committee) • Bernd Lange (MEP and Co-Chairman of the Forum for Automobile and Society) • Giacomo Mattinò (TBC) (Deputy Head of Unit, Automotive Industry – DG Enterprise and Industry) • Reinhard Kolke (Technical Director, ADAC) • Jochen Pfäffle (Vice-President Marketing, Product Planning, Robert Bosch GmbH) • ACEM (expert guest TBC) Dr. Wilfried Klanner, Technical Director of the FIA European Bureau will be the workshop moderator. An exhibition of motorcycle ABS systems will also be organised in connection to the workshop. A draft agenda is attached to the invitation. Time and place Thursday, October 14th 2010 From 09:30 to 13:40 at the Representation of the State of Baden-Württemberg to the European Union Rue Belliard, 60-62 1040 Brussels Registration You can register to the workshop via our website.
